REASONS FOR MY ACTIVITY

Due to the devastating inaction of my country's government in relation to flora and fauna, since 2014, I have promoted eco-movements in my home country of Ukraine, designed to combat incredible littering, illegal deforestation and poaching. At the moment, in Ukraine, virtually every 2nd hunter is illegal. Living next to the forest, I constantly observe huge cars taking the pines into the unknown. Moreover, the forest has a guard status. No petitions helped and it was difficult for one to change anything. I planted many trees with a group of volunteers, many of them did not take root or were destroyed, because in the desert lands the small seedlings were too weak to survive. This prompted me to study this problem and methods of its solution in more depth.You can talk about this for eternity, but it is a necessary background.

WHO I AM

My name is Nanami and I currently reside in Japan and I want to create a unique multi-level project that will benefit both the current generation and the future. I have in-depth knowledge of mycology, microbiology and botany.In Ukraine, I have hazel and oak plantations, which also give fruiting bodies of mushrooms. And no, I did not leave my country, I live in both countries trying to promote eco activism

WHAT IS MY PROJECT ABOUT

Living in Ukraine, I have developed my own unique technology for growing a variety of trees with mycorrhizal fungi. It is difficult and time-consuming to breed such seedlings. One seedling may need from 1 to 2 years of keeping in a clean greenhouse (quarantine period). In Italy, one such seedling, however grown using a different technology, costs from 30 to 70 euros per piece.

Different trees grow different mushrooms and mushroom cultivation is not the real goal of this project.

MYCORRHIZA ON PLANT ROOTS

A mycorrhiza (from Greek μύκης mýkēs, "fungus", and ῥίζα rhiza, "root" means Mushroom root.

When a plant exists in symbiosis with a fungus, they share the necessary nutrients with each other, and fungi also increase the immunity of trees to various kinds of diseases and pests, which reduces the need to use pesticides that are so harmful to the environment, especially in mountainous regions. where there are many beekeeping apiaries.

The Japanese climate is very warm and humid, it rains a lot and the trees are often sick. In most regions of Japan, the soil is blackish with stones, trees do not receive enough nutrients and develop slowly.

Since ancient times, wild trees have survived with the help of mycorrhiza with mushrooms. Nowadays, it is not enough to just plant tree seedlings from scratch and expect the seedlings to take root. Local Japanese have seen many "orange" dry pine seedlings, which have not been able to take root. However, the Japanese do not have the necessary knowledge and time to get it right. I want to help.

I have personally suffered from pesticides in the few hives I own. Thus, I lost one of my 2 strong bee colonies. On the day, bees died in the hundreds and nothing could be done. In Japan, all the shelves are filled with various kinds of chemistry, which permeates all living things. Although the manufacturer promises that everything is harmless.

My project is about the creation of numerous tree plantations with truffle, Suillus and porcinimushrooms mycorrhiza. Oak,hazel and pine (matsu) plantations solve many of the problems that exist in Japan.

WHAT PROBLEMS DOES THE PROJECT SOLVE?

Red pine, oak and hazel are the main plants that interest me. With their help, you can get rid of a huge number of problems hanging over Japan.

1. Fighting landslides in mountainous areas. Tree roots reinforce the numerous slopes.

2. An alternative to any kind of pesticide, because the plant becomes much stronger and survives under the most unfavorable conditions. Acquires immunity to diseases, pests and cannot be attacked by fungi and pests, because the huge truffle mycelium simply eats up the slightest pests that have arisen nearby, as well as mold, etc.

3. Fight against rotting matsu pines (red Japanese pine) by strengthening plants with mycorrhiza. This is one of the most serious flora problems in Japan at the moment, and the government is not looking for a solution. The problem is caused by insect pests such as the gray-haired pine weevil (Brachyderes incanus) and the ginger pine sawfly (Neodiprion sertifer) that eat the needles, roots and trunk of the tree. In just 1 season, one large tree turns into dust. Such trees can fall on a person or a car very suddenly and cause severe injury. Forest infection occurs very quickly, because due to human activity and pesticides sprayed by people, birds leave the plains and rush to the mountains. They no longer wish to eat such beetles. The absence of birds in turn = the absence of foxes and other animals in the food chain. Forests become "deserted" and die.

4. Fight against the invasion of wild boars, bears and deer on the farmers' fields. I understand this is a serious problem as these animals have no natural enemies. Once they reach the harvest, one small family can destroy a field literally overnight. And the boars will trample all the wheat shoots in search of food. All these problems are connected with the fact that people absolutely do not care about animals and occupy all the lands that belonged to animals, driving them high into the mountains, where there is a huge shortage of food. Forests with fungal mycorrhizae will be able to bear fruit nuts much faster, and feed all the Japanese animals in need and, of course, people.

5. With proper care and conditions, such mycorrhizal trees will also give the fruiting bodies of those very mushrooms. And gradually Japan, like Italy, will be able to boast of its wild-growing truffles. The truffle mushroom has been around for as long as the tree itself. Therefore, many generations after me will be able to pick mushrooms for non-commercial purposes. And people and wild animals

6. Restoration of the population of the rarest Japanese mushroom - matsutake. Since the 90s, the Japanese have mercilessly destroyed these mushrooms by aggressive collection, and in our time their population has decreased by more than 70%. At the present time, their collection requires a special license and only on permitted private plots. Why is that? Because the Japanese know little about the culture of mushroom growing. They do not distinguish between edible forest mushrooms, but in their diet shitake, enoki and nameko mushrooms. Planting trees and a program to inform the Japanese will help them to appreciate and understand more why mushrooms are needed, what they are and that mushrooms that are not edible for us should not be destroyed, because animals also eat them. White mushroom (Bolétus edúlis), common butter dish (Suillus luteus), oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) and other mushrooms are known all over the world, but in Japan, virtually no one knows or uses them.

7. Tackling acidified soils in many prefectures for domestication. Truffle loves moist, acidic soil, which many cultivated plants do not like.

WHAT IS THE BENEFIT FOR ME?

For me personally, the project will help me leave a mark on the cultural activity of people, get the rights to gather other activists and, most importantly, build ties with people who are not indifferent to the problems of Japan. It may seem to many that I am simply chasing huge profits from the sale of truffles. However, this is not the case, because the first harvests of truffles can appear only after 5-8 years. In my Ukraine they appeared in the 6th year in small quantities and did not bring me huge incomes, rather they became material for breeding and further research. Even in the presence of mycorrhiza, it is not a fact that under each such tree there will be fruit bodies, but the rest of the bonuses from mycorrhiza still remain.Therefore, my impulse is actually disinterested and aimed at the good of the whole society. However, I will have a guaranteed hazelnut fruit, which I will happily share with my investors when the bushes begin to bear fruit in Japan. It will also be easier for me to get permission to stay in Japan if I actively participate in the life of my city.

WHAT TO SPEND THE FUNDS

I live in Japan, but I do not have citizenship, and I also do not have my own property. I rent a house and cannot plant seedlings in the house. However, I have a very good friend with a large empty area to start planting trees.At this stage, it is vital for me:

1) Build a heated greenhouse for seedlings of shrubs and trees large enough for long-term use. The greenhouse must have a foundation, because in Japan there are seasons of heavy rains and very strong gusty winds from the mountains.

2) The rest of the money (if any) will be spent on the purchase of the necessary nutrients for the trees, a special soil in which there are no pathogens in which the seedlings will be kept under supervision for a whole year.

FOR INVESTORS

The project will develop in any case! However, everyone can help speed up its implementation. Living in another country without my own home, etc., I cannot spend a lot of money on such a global project alone.

In contrast to Ukraine, the prices for seedlings in Japan are extremely high.Therefore, I also accept non-material help, i.e. volunteering, building materials, especially basic seedlings as a gift for carrying out mycorrhization. Bring me 2 seedlings and a year later, after carrying out mycorrhization, you can plant one of them on your site or in the forest, having received care instructions in the first years. (If the seedling successfully passes the quarantine)
