Since its inception in early January, 2018, the Dupree Library has always been a community-supported project.Organizers, who had the vision for what might be, recruited the neighbors in Dashte Barche (Kabul) to be an important part of the new Center. From the building of the furniture, and preparing the rooms, parents and friends of future students have met and built this long sought library and learning center, while hammering nails and sharing chai and cookies.

The decades long violence, poverty, gender inequality and environmental devastation, make it difficult for students, especially those from very poor homes like this, to continue their education, build dreams and maintain hope for the future. There have been a steady stream of students in Math, Dari Language, English, drawing, and unique book clubs, since Dupree’s doors opened for classes (February 2, 2018).Besides, many come to take advantage of borrowing books from the Library.

The all-volunteer teachers of the Dupree Library are reigniting hope, and an active interest in learning. All students, from ages 9 – 18, are equally welcomed in a joyful and fun educational environment.

The Library was named in honor of Nancy Hatch Dupree, an American Historian who dedicated more than 50 years of her life documenting and preserving Afghanistan’s Cultural Heritage. She is an internationally recognized expert on the history, art and archeology of Afghanistan, and is the founder of Afghanistan Centre at Kabul University (ACKU) whose online archives are used all over the world. To those of us at Dupree Library, she is the beloved “Grandmother of Afghanistan.”

We hope you will join the Dupree Library in inspiring the students with Nancy’s same sense of curiosity, and passionate love of learning, and of Afghanistan. We are proud to have been featured on:

  • A World at School also known as Their World – UK based organization
  • Interstellar Bulletin – Star Educational Society’s weekly
  • Afghanistan Centre at Kabul University ACKU – Donating more than 100 books a year!
