Campaign Story
My startup aims at re-orienting the standard furniture market by shifting to sustainable sources of wood to make affordable furniture.
Why do we need a furniture making startup that focuses on sustainability?
Pakistan has the highest rate of deforestation in the world! (https://www.dawn.com/news/1503365). At the current pace, it is expected that the country will run out of its forests in the next 50 years (https://www.pakistantoday.com.pk/2017/03/21/pakistan-to-run-out-of-forests-in-50-years-at-current-rate/). But why furniture? Household sector is the biggest consumer of wood in the country accounting for almost 82% of the wood consumed in a year (page 33, https://www.undp.org/content/dam/pakistan/docs/Environment%20&%20Climate%20Change/UNDP-PK-ECC-Forests%20and%20Biodiversity.pdf).
My startup aims to reduce this dependency on local timber by using reclaimed wood. DülgerOdunWorx uses pallets that are used to carry cargo imported from Germany Switzerland, and Sweden. I have already traced and identified suppliers of pallet wood in Lahore, Pakistan that purchase wood from factories/businesses that import goods from these countries. These pallets meet the European standards of safety and sustainability. By using them for furniture or for other household use, I intend to disrupt the furniture manufacturing market in Lahore. If this succeeds, I hope to scale this up to a bigger level.
What do I need the money for?
I need to purchase some equipment that consists mostly of cutting and planing tools. I also need to register my company and hire the services of a lawyer that can help me navigate the legal landscape. As of now I am running the company from a small room in my house. All this requires an estimated cost of US$ 2500. There is no minimum amount that you must donate. Every penny, every dollar counts! I will be eternally grateful for your help in this venture.
Why Dülger OdunWorx? Dülger is Turkish word for Carpenter and Odun is wood in the same. Odun also sounds similar to Odin - the god of wisdom and mischief in Norse mythology. Worx is simply a poetic license, if you permit.

Why is your money going to Haaris instead of Fahd?
The linked PayPal account belongs to my brother, Haaris Ali. PayPal does not operate in Pakistan, where I live. My brother lives in Australia and has agreed to accept the donations to his PayPal account.
