Duck Duck the blind duck – Farm Sanctuary Fundraiser

Duck Duck the blind duck was born without eyes and rescued from a local Tractor Supply Company during Chick Days when he was only a few days old. I had gone in to the store to buy dog food when I heard an awful cry coming from the bins in the middle of the store. I looked in one of the metal tubs to see a tiny yellow duckling lying on his back, being trampled by two dozen larger ducklings rushing from food to water. At first, I thought he must just be small, but as I continued to watch, I saw that he was walking in circles. "What's wrong with it?" I asked the man tending this section of the store. "He ain't got no eyes!" "I keep puttin' him by the water and he keeps going off!" said the man as he moved the tiny duck close to the water once again. I gave my fiancé "the look", and there was no leaving the duckling behind. We paid for our tiny blind duck and left the store.

I knew the chances of his living were slim, so I decided I wasn't even going to name him. I promised myself I wouldn't get too attached. I fondly called him "little duck duck", and for the first month, he made his home in a Rubbermaid tub with a heat lamp beside my bed. Much to my surprise, my young golden retriever Annie took an immediate interest in him. She would watch him, and when she was allowed, would gently sniff and lick him. One day she even brought over her stuffed duck toy and dropped it into the tub!!! The duckling was immediately comforted by the dog, and they quickly became inseparable. With love and care from his humans and his "guide dog", Annie, Duck Duck has not only survived, but thrived and is now 5 months old!

I currently work for an amazing non-profit organization, and am lucky enough to rent a home in town owned by the organization. Duck Duck currently lives in my tiny back yard with his new duck friend, Goose. Due to the area where my fiancé and I reside, finding farm land is nearly impossible, and when it is found, it comes at a hefty price for a first time home buyer! I would love more than anything to purchase a small farm to give Duck Duck the home he deserves, and to provide other animals in need with a forever home!
