As most of you know (since I can’t stop speaking about it), I went to South Africa last summer for 6 weeks to volunteer. I was only supposed to stay for 4 weeks at first but couldn’t leave the kids so ended up staying a bit longer. I thought I would go there, meet the kids, live an amazing experience and that would be the end of it. However I can’t stay away from them and I am going back for two months starting the 21st of June!

To give a little context: I was volunteering in the Surf Outreach project with DTR (Dreams To Reality) in Muizenberg next to Cape Town. This is a program that runs every day after school. It provides kids from 9 to 15 with a safe environment, they get to learn how to surf and quite honestly they are amazing surfers! This scheme also teaches them valuable life skills, such as self-confidence. You wouldn’t believe that behind their happy smiles is a life filled with violence, alcoholism, poverty, drug abuse, physical abuse, racism, gang shootings and so much more. Despite this, you will always see them with a smile on their faces, happy to be surfing; the program offers them a safe environment, a place to express themselves and something to look forward to every day.

This program also teaches them to take care of their equipment, repair their boards and wetsuits. This gives them the skills to be competent and independent outside of the program. Most of them could then become surf instructors and a few have strong potential to become professional surfers!

The program however is in need of support and any amount of money will make a huge difference. All the money raised will go towards ensuring the kids have food every day, warm wetsuits, maintenance of the surf room... What the program really needs at the moment is new boards for the kids to be able to continue to improve their technique and for them to take during competitions. There are not enough boards for all of them and some of the boards are getting old and breaking, it would be amazing to be able to bring them new boards. I will send pictures of what this fundraising was able to buy them once I get back there.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and you can see a few pictures of their beautiful faces. We might not be able to change the world these children live in, or erase the hardships they have had to face but we can try to make a positive difference in their lives and make their future as bright as possible.
