Hello, guys! I need your help. Thank you for taking time to drop by.
I created this campaign ad to appeal for help in raising the remaining amount of $35,000.00 to support and sustain my 2-year graduate studies at the University of San Diego, CA, USA. I have recently applied and got successfully admitted to the University’s 2-year MA in Peace and Justice (MAPJ) Program. The university has generously offered me a $20,000.00 worth tuition scholarship for 2 years and a 50% discount on tuition from the total of $55,000.00 estimated cost of living. For me, the USD 's program on peace studies is by far the best graduate program on peace and justice studies because of its strong emphasis on concrete peace and justice-related issues today and value of grounded praxis through its immersion options.
To pursue the course, I would need to raise before June 2019 ends the amount of $ 35,000.00--$40,000.00, as estimated by the University for MAPJ program. I would need to raise it and then present to the USD a proof of funding for the program. This is where I would need your help. The proof is critical as it would form as the University’s basis for issuing Form I-20, a document which is essential in obtaining student visa at the US Embassy in Manila, Philippines.
If I may add some personal and proposal background, I am a young professional from the Philippines. I graduated in 2012 from Mount Angel Seminary, Oregon, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy "with honors." I was also a recipient of the “St. Anselm Award” which is given to an undergraduate in appreciation and recognition of his academic leadership in the field of humanities and philosophy. Since 2012, I have been engaged in teaching ministry at a local university. Aside from teaching philosophy courses, I also do formation ministry for our employees and for top performing but economically challenged scholars of our school.
It was my ministry experience that inspired me to consider taking up graduate course on peace-building. My encounters with young people who suffer, or are prone to, depression, suicidal and bullying tendencies have frequently cited their family as one of the significant factors that affected the formation and quality of their self-image and disposition towards life. Some of them would even acknowledge the inner wounds inflicted by disruptive and counter-formative family dynamics and a breakdown of values-witnessing in the family. My own personal experience of conflicts, dialogue facilitation and mediation in the family also confirms how localized, family-level justice-sensitive and peace-oriented formation is urgently needed. Apparently, personal formation and micro-relational formation within the family are grassroots conditions of integral human flourishing.
From of these recurrent experiences, I grew more convinced of the need for stronger human(istic) formation as well as family formation components in our educational system. I believe emotional empowerment and parental accompaniment are intimate demands of justice and peace. As a matter of need, people must feel respected, enabled and affirmed, supported and valued in order to flourish. Flourishing is a condition and goal of justice and, thus, of peace. Given this, it is reasonable to hold that personal and family formation is the most strategic response. The family is where seeds of peace are sown and grown as a young child witnesses and learns the processes, values and principles of creative relationships.
Our community, for its part, needs to critically reflect on, and by all means reinforce, family life as a basic institution of justice and peace. While they are important, international legal and juridical structures and declarations promoting justice and peace would remain ineffective without a strong micro-relational, peace-oriented, family-level formation component in education. In this time of crisis and clash of values, family life becomes all the more crucial to integral individual and collective flourishing. This means that a democratic society may not simply and exclusively favor and over-valorize a science-technology-business-oriented model of educational system, but must ensure that all educational levels have strong humanistic, relationality and values-oriented components that could mold young individuals to become relationally intelligent, conscientious and responsible citizens.
With my experiences and realizations, I began to consider pursuing graduate research studies on the area of peace-building with a specific focus on formative family dynamics and parenting styles. I hope to share the fruits of my studies when I return to the country, where the need is greater. Through this graduate study, I hope to be able to understand better how parents and families could be empowered so that children and young people develop personal and relational competencies through empowered family relationships.
In view of this, I believe through the generosity of friends like you, I would be able to realize this aspiration. I would very much appreciate whatever amount of donation you could extend to help me sustain my studies. Please rest assured that your donation would be used for the intended purpose, as declared above.
I hope you consider helping me out in this fundraising. I really appreciate your time for reading this. Thank you very much!
