On 22 December at 21:27 PM hours, high tide/tsunami struck Carita Beach in Banten Province, and hit the coast around the Sunda Strait, particularly in Pandenglang, South Lampung and Serang districts.

As of 23 December 2018, there are 222 fatalities and 843 injured. To date, the PMI has deployed 22 units of ambulance (with medical crew), 14 water trucks (eight units for Lampung province and six units for Banten province), five mobile clinic teams (three teams to Banten and two teams to Lampung), and two units of helicopters for search and rescue operations. PMI will be providing a more detailed assessment report and plan of action.

As of December 24 2018, At least 281 people have been killed and 1,016 injured in Indonesia after a tsunami hit coastal areas along the Sunda Strait on December 22, according to the country’s National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB). Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams are in the affected area to provide support for local health interventions. The tsunami waves affected Pandeglang, Serang, South Lampung, and Tanggamus regencies.

MSF has mobilized three teams in the area, with one team supporting the health center in Carita, a second team supporting the health center in Labuan—both in Pandeglang district—and a mobile team visiting various communities to treat injured patients unable to make it to a health facility.

While the affected areas are slowly beginning to recover, many streets remain blocked, making it difficult to access local health centers.

At the two health centers in Pandeglang, one of the areas hardest hit by the tsunami, MSF teams are augmenting the capacity of local health staff to care for injured patients. MSF teams are actively involved in case management, with severe cases being referred to area hospitals.

Daniel von Rège, MSF head of mission in Indonesia, provided the following update on December 23:

“Since early 2018, MSF has had an adolescent health project in Indonesia supporting the Ministry of Health in Labuan and Carita in Pandeglang district, one of the areas most severely hit by the tsunami following an eruption of Anak Krakatoa volcano late on the evening of December 22, 2018. The MSF teams in Pandeglang responded to the influx of patients on the morning of December 23 as both injured people and [dead] bodies were brought in to the health centers. With support from the MSF country coordination team, which arrived a few hours later, MSF liaised with the health center teams, prioritizing immediate needs.

All funds raised will go towards the Sunda Straits Tsunami. If you'd like to also make a donation to provide relief to the local poor, please do so on our fundraising campaign here.
