First quarter's Forest Arts Grant went to Uncovered Artistry to help them with the publishing of an anthology of poetry, prose, and visual art by survivors of domestic and sexual abuse. It will aim to challenge misconceptions about sexual and domestic abuse, as well as broaden the audience’s awareness of abuse in their lives and the lives of those around them.
Second Forest Quarterly Arts Grant was awarded to Edinburgh Zine Library to create a series of workshops concentrated on mental health and personal zines resulting in creating a collaborative zine. Edinburgh Zine Library is an independent, collectively run initiative that became a platform for different artists and activists. They have created an archive of over 200 zines from all over the world, also host open access workshops and other regular events around Scotland.
What is The Forest?
We are a volunteer-run, collectively-owned, free arts and events project. We run a vegetarian café with an open stage and a dedicated gallery space for people to get involved in any creative activity imaginable.
The Forest is here to to enable greater access to all art forms, facilitate the development of artists’ work and skills, provide opportunities to learn and skill-share and foster co-operation and cultural understanding.
A lot of different projects and artists have come out of the Forest in the last 17 years. Our events have included music, theatre, dancing, yoga, massage, poetry recitals, art displays, knit-ins, book tours, language teaching, monsterbike making…and plenty more.
We’re always on the lookout for new ideas and want to help exciting creative projects to sprout. This is why we are starting the Forest Quarterly Grant to support local and international artists put their ideas into practice, and encourage them to use the Forest as a resource and platform for their work, by offering financial and other support.
How we will use the money
All money donated will go towards the Forest Quarterly Grant. £400 will be paid out to two recipients of the grant. Any extra money we raise will go towards the next Quarterly Grant (October deadline).
