Ever thought of going without water for a few days or having to walk a few kilometres to a water source, an unprotected swamp, to get soiled water teeming with pathogens? More than 40% of the children in Masulita sub-county of rural Uganda go through this routine every day and many of them are less than 10 years of age.

The lack of infrastructure for potable water and sanitation has had a major impact on the health and opportunities for these children. The water source, which is obtained from the unprotected swamp, often lead to life threatening diseases such as dysentery and diarrhoea. Cholera and candidiasis is also commonly prevalent in the area due the limited and dilapidated sanitation facilities present in Masulita. Furthermore, children have to forgo precious schooling hours to retrieve water from faraway sources.

Children at their age, and perhaps anyone, should not be made to go through such suffering and pain and at The Mmanze Centre for Rural Development and Training (“MACERUDET”), we are determined to change the lives of these children. We plan to install rain water harvesting tank and pit latrine block in ten schools in the Masulita sub-county area which will significantly improve the access to basic drinkable water and sanitation. However, we still lacking funding to carry out this life-changing project.

Every day, we have a chance to set things right and to change the lives of those less fortunate. Maybe today is that day.
