As basic need as housing, today has been reduced just into a commodity. Linking housing with the market has made it unaffordable and inaccessible to the poorest population. I work at the grass root level in Mumbai with the slum communities who live in constant fear of demolition of their informal settlement. Mumbai's half of the population lives in slum settlements. Mumbai being the hotspot of real estate/infrastructural development has a perpetual requirement for land. This lead to slum demolition drives. Often considered as an eyesore, slum settlements house Mumbai’s service guild which actually run and build the city. For example, our Ola/Uber drivers, auto rickshaw/taxi drivers, vegetables/fruits vendors, electricians, plumber, masons, carpenter, domestic help etc. Breaking their houses without rehabilitating them is unfair especially when a poor cannot afford a formal housing at a current market rate.
I am quite happy that in all six years of my voluntary work, I have not only protected 5000 houses in different slums but also ensured basic amenities like water and electricity. I also run a small children center where underprivileged children learn and recreate. I am currently running a massive campaign for 30,000 people who were wrongly rehabilitated in a toxic neighborhood. With two favorable orders from top court, I am currently negotiating with the government to implement the orders. I am also fighting a number of cases for slum dwellers in State Human Rights Commission.
My work is massive. I need an efficient light weight laptop which i can carry on the field and work hassle free. Cost of machine is around 1050USD including the cut of fundraiser. Please donate generously so that I can work smoothly.
