As you certainly know, a fratricidal war has been ravaging Eastern Ukraine since April 2014. According to recent UN reports, civil deaths exceed 5’000 people, including young children, pregnant women, and disabled.
But not only the bombs are responsible for these tragic deaths: hunger, cold and the lack of medicine and care aggravate the population’s sufferings.
Due to the massive destruction of infrastructure but also because of the economic blockade established by the Ukrainian government, health system in this region is currently almost non-existent.
Furthermore, blockade of the banking system makes it impossible to supply hospitals, orphanages, retirement homes, community centers...
After the shelling and violent bombing of last month -responsible for the deaths of several hundred civilians as well as hundreds of wounded, who seek help in urban hospitals of Gorlovka, Lugansk, Ilovaisk,…- medical profession has sent out an appeal for help to the European community, in order to obtain sufficient material and medical aid. Indeed, lack of medical equipment and pharmaceuticals, added to lack of medical personnel weigh heavily on functioning of hospitals, eventually causing them to saturate !
Pervomaisk’s neonatal center, the only neonatal structure in Lugansk region, has stopped working. Furthermore, today, there is only one single general practitioner per 100 thousand inhabitants in the region of Lugansk (including the cities Brianka, Pervomaisk, Stakhanov) !
Moreover, since January 21th, Ukrainian government has introduced a ban on leaving the territory of Donbass, by setting up police roadblocks and confining civilians in combat zones. These measures make it impossible to deliver humanitarian aid !
World Health Organization has recently put the figure of 5 million Europeans, men, women and children who are totally abandoned to their fate, and this, in the beginning of 21th century !
