Dogs of San Kamphaeng: help, spay, neuter, return

Update posted by Rung Samanthong On Sep 11, 2016

We are three people who want to help the dogs we see and walk amongst in the local surrounds of Sankamphaeng, (Chiangmai, Thailand). As people learned of our work and our intentions, people have joined us, often pledging to help or care for a particular dog (or cat) for a period of time.

Without constant care and attention, the health and condition of dogs quickly deteriorates. We see dogs with fur loss and open wounds caused by the demodex parasite, dogs with broken legs, and dogs in pain, dogs at risk of death or injury on busy roads. While many kind people offer these dogs food, most people do not have the resources to offer the dogs a safe place to stay, medical intervention, and spaying and/or neutering. We try to help by administering medical attention to suffering dogs.

Spaying and neutering dogs is the best way to end the long-term suffering: it is easier to care for fewer dogs than it is for an expanding population. We seek to work with the local people of San Kamphaeng to help them care for their dogs when needed, to administer medication to sick dogs who are without carers, and to neuter and spay the local dogs to keep the population from growing.

When we become aware of a dog requiring assistance, we typically meet and discuss possible ways to assist the individual dog. We have to consider whether the dog is friendly, whether the dog has an owner, and, if so, whether the owner is happy to allow us to help the dog. Sometimes a dog will need to be accessed by a vet, in which case we will access the possibility of arranging this - often one of the constraints is transport. We then come up with a long-term plan for the individual dog, including what medical procedures to go ahead with in accordance with limited funds and resources, and the environment to which the dog must be returned. We try to have each dog we help spayed or neutered.
