Dogs Need Love Too

In Costa Rica on the southern Pacific coast in the city of Ciudad Cortes there is an impoverished family who is caring for stray dogs – 18 of them. Their love of these dogs, in spite of their own condition, drives them to try and provide the dogs with love and care. Love, drive, and desire however does not provide good shelter or good food for the dogs.

We want to improve the conditions for both the dogs and the family. Our initial aim is to erect a larger shelter on the property with a raised floor to keep the dogs dry and help control pests such as fleas, etc. As part of this project we are lining up local veterinarians to provide heath screens, medicine, and spay / neuter services at reduced costs. We will provide food for the dogs and assist the family with food as may be needed.

“We” are ex-pat Americans and Canadians, mostly retirees, who live in Costa Rica. Costa Rica is a wonderful country with warm and friendly people; however, caring for “mascotas” (pets) can be a secondary concern when economic security is a challenge for the family.
