SEGA TIPIK

We aim at producing a 52 minutes documentary on Sega, the traditional music of Mauritius.

The estimated budget for the project is MUR 1.4 million, i.e. approximately 40,000$.

SYNOPSIS:

Dating from the 18th century, Sega is a vibrant performing art, including music and singing, traditional instruments and dancing. Engendered by slaves on the then-called Ile de France, it has become emblematic of the creole community of Mauritius. The Sega culture has been transmitted and shared from a generation to another; this is how it survived oppression, various interdictions and social prejudices. Sega has had to follow various trends to make its way to the present times. It adapted to fast demographic changes, to technological innovations and to a fluctuating living style. Even if modern artists have somehow diluted the essence of Sega, modernity has significantly contributed to raise the whole Sega culture above the barriers of the past. Today, Sega has won over the whole Mauritian population and is considered a “national heritage”. As a matter of fact, many contemporary artists are back to its most traditional form. Constantly on the move, the “Sega world” has made a new step ahead in 2014. That year, Traditional Sega was inscribed on the representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Internationally recognized as a cultural heritage, Mauritian Sega can think over its future… in a more sustainable way.

Director’s note:

Since 2014, traditional Sega music has put Mauritius on the representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Our documentary wants to celebrate this vibrant performing art as part of our rich Mauritian history, but the more so as a “living culture”. Our film also aims at paying a tribute to the various generations of “Sega ambassadors” and “Sega families” who have wholly dedicated their lives to their art. Moreover, Sega had a big contribution to the complex nation building process that made of Mauritius a peaceful multicultural society. Our documentary will deal about this sociological aspect thoroughly. Last but not least, our project aims at producing some “food for thought” about how to preserve and promote Sega as a cultural heritage not only for Mauritius but for humanity at large.

We want our documentary to become a reference video on sega. It will be sent to:

-International film Film festivals, e.g :: Ile Courts – Mauritius; Festival International d’Afrique et des Iles-FIFAI.

-Local, regional and international television channels.

-The Unesco

THEMES OF THE DOCUMENTARY:

-Sega as an active force through the history of Mauritius.

-Sega as a culture with its own riches, traditions and transmission processes.

-Sega as a symbol of the fight of men for freedom and peace.

-The contributions of various generations of artists and thinkers to sega.

-Dreams, ideas and visions of local artists about sega.

The work to be done:

We have already edited a 9 minutes teaser which is quite clear about our concept and treatment for the 52 minutes documentary.

We need a thorough database on this subject which appeals to the past, but equally to our present times. In addition to documents available in various archives, we need to interview sega legends, sega thinkers, intellectuals and historians, and of course the new generations who writing their own legends. Our story will feed from everything these artists will share with us: personal experiences, opinions, souvenirs, dreams, hopes…and specially their music.

Each contributor will be filmed in his own environment. It has to be noted that a documentary on sega is also a documentary on Mauritius, and this implies location scouting and shooting schedules split on many days.

What exactly do we need funds for?

  • Merci Pascal! Tu es le 1er sur la liste qui je l’espère sera longue, l’idée c’est aussi de faire participer tous les mauriciens au lieu de chercher un seul gros sponsors. Bises
