Diving in Zanzibar – Support local fishermen

Update posted by Julia Maier On Aug 21, 2017

Some people asked themselves, who we, Julia and Rebecca are. So we wanted to give you more information about us and our motivation to participate in this project:

My name is Julia and I met Cholo in June 2016 during my holidays in Zanzibar. Someday I received his logo draft announcing the launch of FUN DIVERS ZANZIBAR on Facebook. Since I knew the situation in the fishing village of Nungwi and as I am a graphic designer it went without saying that I wanted to help him create a much nicer logo. Realising my impact on his future I kept supporting Cholo with all the marketing issues that he did not have any experience with before. To do that is a rewarding and interesting experience to me that enriches my life.

My name is Rebecca and after my Bachelor degree in Tourism I worked for half a year in Zanzibar in a hotel. This is also when I met Cholo. At that time he was still employed at the diving centre with which I did my Padi Open Water Certificate. By September 2016, when I went back to Zanzibar for holidays, he had already started his company FUN DIVERS ZANZIBAR, so I dove with him. However, I am only directly involved in the project since the start of the fundraising campaign as Julia approached me for support. This project gives me hands-on training in online marketing. But much more important, I’ve experienced how difficult it can be to achieve things in Tanzania which are taken for granted in my home country Switzerland. Therefore, I’m happy to support Cholo with my knowledge wherever useful.

Dive-related media platforms and magazines started to support our campaign for the first local PADI Dive Resort in the fishing village of Nungwi. A great chance to win more divers for this fantastic community project. For the moment we got published in Germany at www.atlantis-magazin.de and Taucher.Net, in Switzerland at the Switzerland Underwater-Sports-Association www.susv.ch and we are waiting for more to follow. Thank you so much for this wonderful support!

The incoming donations enabled Cholo to order two huge exterior doors and frames at a local carpentry. These craftsmen make massive one-off productions in size 9 x 8 feet from pieces of Tanzanian hardwood. Thank you for your excellent support!
