I am a teacher at Galenbidunuwewa Central School - a school located in a Sri lanka.
Unfortunately, the transition to online learning due to the Coronavirus pandemic, has caused much distress to many children and families at our school who have been disproportionately impacted by the digital divide. This has consequently rendered many children without access to adequate laptops/ Computers or in some cases, without even electricity.
Across the country, this pandemic has made it that much easier for children from vulnerable and disadvantaged families to inevitably get left behind. This is particularly true for Galenbidunuwewa Central School, a school that serves a high population of vulnerable children and families with no recourse to public funds. We are desperately seeking a reliable source of laptops – this time to purchase – but supply is a real issue at this time. I have already given 4 used computers that I bought with my own money to the most desperate children in the school. The goal is not to buy the most expensive computer but to buy functional and cheap computers for many children so we can accomplish distance learning for all of them
We are going to buy these cheap but very functional core 2 quad computers. These cost 90$ per system with monitors keyboards and others.
From the very start of the first lockdown, the school is trying its very best to support these families as best as it can. We are currently in need of 10000$ in order to buy sufficient laptops/computers/smartphones so our vulnerable children can be provided with a permanent solution Any additional money raised will be used to buy other essential resources which are vital for online learning; such as buying data, dongles and stationery.
Just like every child in Sri Lanka, children at Galenbidunuwewa Central School deserve the very best start to their early life and shouldn't have their learning impacted by factors that are out of their control. The digital divide is impacting our community a lot more than others and our children just want the opportunity to access their learning. Please join us on this mission to achieve this!
We are relying on community efforts to help us support the children and their families.
Every donation will make a massive difference. Please donate what you can.
With deep gratitude,
Galenbidunuwewa Central School
