This week has been especially difficult for educators in New Orleans, as the news of DeVos' appointment coincided with a tornado that wreaked havoc on Nola East, where many of the kids who go to school in the city live. http://www.nola.com/weather/index.ssf/2017/02/new_...
This is a discretionary fund for the immediate and personal needs of students and employees at Sci Academy (http://www.sciacademy.org/). Sci Academy is a school out in New Orleans East that I had the great chance to visit last year on a panel of judges for social change projects related to health. I was moved by each and every young bright mind! Unfortunately, students and employees alike lost their homes.
The Sci Academy community offers me hope and reminds me of how hard people work to lift up children with limited opportunities. In solidarity and support of these folks, I want to raise money that is available for the staff/community to use at their discretion to support the kids affected by tornado in the short term. I'm drawing on relationships of trust here, and invite you to support the affected children and youth by way of the teachers/administrators that see them every day.
(It is unlikely that I will update frequently on how the funds are used. This is a campaign based on relationships of support and trust and fast turn around, to minimize the obstacles to short-term relief needs. I trust that in the weeks to come, more organized, institutional relief efforts will occur.)
Thanks for any support you'd like to extend!
