Campaign Story
This campaign is listed under medical and healing as this is a healing process for me.
Please support me in getting my life back
About 10 years ago I was diagnosed with PLS, a rare form of Motor Neuron disease.I have very limited mobility in my legs but still good upper body strength. Since becoming wheelchair bound 8 years ago my confidence has taken a beating and my life became an existence instead of a life with purpose.I fell into a trap of believing “This is it, I cannot do anything anymore”.I watched with envy others enjoying life and preferred to hide away from the world rather than embracing it.
On 30th of December 2016 tragic circumstances let to a friend’s 2 year old son losing his life. It touched me very deeply. When she started an awareness campaign “DoingItForNatey” my immediate reaction was “I want to be part of this”.Until I realised it involved participating in the Cape Argus Cycle race, a 109km cycle in one of the most beautiful places in the world, Cape Town South Africa. My reply to her was “Hmmm…I don’t think so”. I am unfit and totally sedentary. Then I realised I MUST do this. Not just for Natey but for myself as well.I need to get my life back, my joy, I need this goal to transform myself back into the person I once was.
I cannot ride in the Cape Argus this year.It is in less than a month but I really want to ride it next year for Natey, for me.
I have found a trainer who specialised in disabilities and who will be able to help me get fit and ready for the race.I have the absolute motivation to do this. But I lack the funds to buy a Hand Cycle. They are extremely expensive and second hand cycles are almost impossible to obtain. Please help me reach my dream and get my life back again! Any amount regardless of how small will be appreciated
