Just after their eldest daughter Layla (5) had her first birthday party in their new home Country Cyprus, the family all got dressed in their swimming costumes and were ready for a swim, only to have to flee out of the house moments later with nothing but the clothes (costumes) on their backs. They had minutes to grab their birth certificates, passports and their wedding album and only just got their family out of the burning house in time.
Carle waited anxiously in the car with their 2 little girls and the 2 dogs that they were pet sitting as her husband ran back into the house to see what he could do, the fire department arrived, put out a part of the fire and had to leave to tend to many other houses also burning leaving the Dippenaar family’s home to burn all over again.
A Facebook post from Carle made the night of the incident:
This day will forever be etched in our memories. The day we lost every earthly possession we had.
We came to Cyprus, very bravely, to start a new home in a safer place for our two young daughters (2 and 5). We packed all of our belongings into a container because we knew we would need that sense of “home”, for us, but especially for our girls, seeing as family would be so far away.
Today, on the eve of my daughter’s 5th birthday, we had to flee our home in a matter of seconds. We watched helplessly as our home, and newfound sanctuary, burnt down. We lost all of our clothes and shoes. We lost our photographs, and sentimental mementos from home. I lost all of my jewellery, some of it passed down generations. My girls lost all of their toys. We lost our sense of comfort. We don’t have beds, furniture or even underwear. The life we once had, and all material ties to it, are no more. The humble beginnings of businesses we were starting, and the hard work we put into them, as we are not permitted to be employed here, are lost too.
But - we do have each other. We are safe, our lives were spared. We have our God and His promise to us. We have the kindest, most generous friends and neighbours, and are humbled by the community coming together to help us.
GJ and I want to thank everyone for every sms, phonecall, whatsapp and message. We really ask you to pray for us. And to keep praying.”
Returning to the remains of their home the morning after the fire the family was told their house is completely uninhabitable and has been condemned, they have lost everything they have, EVERYTHING! Every item that has sentimental value and every necessity is gone, Layla (5) asked her mom how she was going to go to school because even her school bag has now burnt.
Gj and Carle now have the monumental task of rebuilding a home ahead of them all the while still trying to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for their little girls.
We are asking for any donation possible from your pocket to help this family recuperate and completely rebuild their home and their lives. Anything will be appreciate more than you know.
