Dinig na Kita – Cochlear Implant needed

Dinig na Kita, or I Can Hear You Now, is a fund raising my friends and I started for a colleague/friend. His first born whose name is Tanglaw (or Torch of light in English) was born with profound deafness. This occurs when a person cannot understand speech through hearing, even when sound is amplified. Profound deafness refers to a total lack of hearing. An individual with profound deafness is unable to detect sound at all. Sensorineural hearing loss is permanent. No surgery can repair damage to the sensory hair cells themselves, but there is a surgery that can bypass the damaged cells. A person with severe to profoundsensorineural hearing loss may be able to have partial hearing restored with a cochlear implant.

This is what we want for Tanglaw, a 3-year old boy. He has been undergoing therapy for while now and is preparing for the surgery by mid-October (if everything goes well and the doctor gives the ok).

We made tshirts initially and sold them and had all revenues going directly to the child, however it is simply not enough. The cost of the surgery is about Php 700,000 without the doctor's fees and other hospital charges and that is only for one ear. The total approximate amount that their family needs is Php2 Million or $40,000. We have had other help and anything else we can manage to get will be of great help.

I am knocking into your kind hearts to help Tanglaw be the torch that he is for his family and his younger brother. Let's make his future bright by helping him be ready for the life ahead of him.

Life as we know it is already hard, without being able to communicate will make it twice harder if not more.

This could be a gift we can give to him and his future.
