The goal of my project is to be able to show that life for someone living with a disability isn't a bad life it's just a different life. My Pomeranian Red is blind and has been for his entire life.He suffers from glaucoma requiring the surgical removal of his right eye. Eventually and probably sooner rather than later Red will have to have his left side eye removed as well. At the time his right eye was removed his left eye should have been removed also. The only reason this wasn't done was the fear that a dog without eyes would never be adopted. There was reason to be afraid his blindness requires patience and training to accommodate him . He has been my dog for over four years and I have been able to find out about the kind companion he is. I adopted him for two reasons: as a person living with multiple disabilities I knew there was nothing to fear and I had the time and knowledge to care for him. The typical reaction of people who meet him is an expression of sadness based on the mistaken belief that he is sad or feels bad having to live a life unable to see. First I hope to get his medical status updated even if it means that his left eye must be removed. Secondly I want to spread the word and create unique ways to show that Red's life is not bad it's just different. In most things Red is like any other dog and he has learned to adapt on his own. It's more than just using other senses Red has learned to use the sidewalks in our neighborhood to map out the safe places for him to walk and the way the pavement feels under his feet.
