I am Nikolai Balansay, a freshman in college. As a person who lives in the Philippines, I still live under quarantine with my four-person family. Every midnight, I hear my mother cry because she cannot breathe. My father and I take turns watching her during the night to make sure that the oxygen tank is working, and that she sleeps well.
My mother is Raquel Balansay, the person in the photo. She is a hemodialysis patient. In 2019, we rushed my mother to a hospital after drowning in her sustenance. The doctor told my father that both her kidneys have failed, and a fistula for hemodialysis is the only way for her to live. Thus, she became a biweekly dialysis patient.
Ever since the pandemic, the cost of my mother’s hemodialysis has skyrocketed. Once a three hundred pesos (PHP 300.00 or ~USD 6.00) per session dialysis has turned into one thousand three hundred pesos (PHP 1,300.00 or ~USD 26.00) per session dialysis. This has turned to the worse when the nurses were discussing another price hike after PhilHealth, our government healthcare provider was no longer sending funds to the hospital. Overall, the family spends around six thousand pesos (PHP 6,000.00 or ~USD 119.00; medicine included).
A year after the start of her dialysis, my mother suffered from enlargement of the stomach. Too much water in her systems caused this. To counter this, my mother had to become a triweekly dialysis patient and had to be implanted with an abdominal pigtail.
During this month, my mother had her abdominal pigtail removed because of its three (3) months limit. We could not afford another surgery because of the sixty thousand pesos (PHP 60,000 or ~ USD 1,182) price. My mother then talked to me about her two last dreams in life:
1) She wants to reach 50 years old (she was born on September 11, 1972).
2) She wants to see my brother reach college (application for colleges opens next year at around July).
I know my mother is dying. I just want to reciprocate my mother’s love by making her attain the last two wishes she has. The 5000 USD I ask will cover the costs of her dialysis until Q2 2022, abdominal pigtail surgery, and medicine. Please be an instrument of God in helping my mother receive a miracle.
We all have the power to change lives. Please be that somebody who would help me extend my mother’s life. Any amount is an enormous help, and also please SPREAD and SHARE.
Thank you very much and God bless!
