Dialysis for Janice

Janice Animos Matudio, Single, 33 years old, is from Bugallon, Pangasinan, Philippines. She is the eldest daughter of Ida and Charlie. She graduated from University of Pangasinan and worked as an employee in a jewelry store in Ongpin, Manila. She is the breadwinner of the family supporting her parents and two younger sisters, Helen and Inday. She went to the city to work for there is no work available for her in their province whose main source of income comes from farming. She was very hardworking and struggled to provide for her family despite the distance.

It was July 2014 when Janice was suddenly stricken by a disease. At first, the doctors in Nazareth Hospital in Pangasinan was not able to give her diagnosis. The lack of medical facilities has forced her family to move her to another hospital. She was then transferred to Dagupan Hospital which later diagnosed her with kidney failure. She had to immediately undergo dialysis every day in the hospital to keep her alive. The hospital bills loomed as she had been placed in ICU for days. The doctors had to place a fistula on her arm to aide during dialysis. After one month, the family was able to pay off the minimum amount to get her out of the hospital. They still have unpaid hospital bills which they are trying to pay off little by little.

After a few months, through her family and friends, she was able to recover and was advised to undergo dialysis every 2 to 3 days. Every procedure required her to pay for the procedure and 2 units of B+ Blood (which costs Php 1,500 each bag). The treatment is a big part of her daily routine and she needs to dialysis indefinitely.

Last December 31 2015, another challenge came. She woke up early for her routine dialysis and was ready for the procedure. The nurses tried to use her existing fistula but informed her that it can no longer be used. They temporarily used a catheter on her neck for the dialysis. The doctor then told her that she needs to get a new fistula on her neck.

She is currently confined in Pangasinan Provincial Hospital waiting and hoping she will be able to afford a new one.
