My aunt and uncle got married in 2015. They have two beautiful kids a boy who is 4 years old and a girl 3 years old. My aunty used to have migraine which turned worst in Nov/Dec 2018. She had an MRI scan presenting tumor in her brain. She had an emergency surgery on 1st of Jan 2019 and when specimen was sent for further investigation, we got a devastating news that she was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiform commonly known as GBM. It is graded IV by WHO and is considered as one of the worst tumor of brain with expected life not more than 14 to 16 weeks with all the standard treatment provided. After surgery she went through 30 sessions of radiations and 24 sessions of chemotherapy (Temozolomide). Tumor was under control till April 2020. Another MRI in May 2020 represented an interval increase in the tumor which grew rapidly resulting numbness in the right part of her body (right leg and right arm) which made it difficult for her to do a normal walk. She was operated again on 16th of Aug with histopathology report representing GBM. She is on bed now and cannot walk at her own. She cannot speak or hold things in her right arm. Her memory is very weak. Later she went through 10 sessions of Stereotactic Radio Therapy followed by regular sessions of physiotherapy but nothing worked well. Now her oncologist suggests 1000 mg Avastin injections (started with 800 mg and later would increment the doze to 1000 mg) after every two weeks to improve her symptoms and reduce the doze of steroids (dexamethsone from past 10 months with varied doze) which resulted in weight gain and many other symptoms. My uncle is a teacher by profession. He has been managing all the expenses of the treatment from the past two years along with looking after his 2 young kids and my aunt too, trying to achieve work-life balance but it becomes very hard now. During the whole two years, he spent almost $ 40,000 - 43,000 USD. In Pakistan, there is no support of Cancer patients from government of Pakistan, he managed everything at his own till to date now. But know all the possibilities and savings have been utilized. 1000 mg of Avastin costs around USD 1800 which would result in USD 21,600 for six months. He spent my all his savings and went into a loan. He would be able to manage the running expense of his family and his wife's treatment including medicine, MRIs, blood tests, physiotherapy and other miscellaneous expenses. He needs funds to continue with the Avastin Injection to provide my aunt with the better quality of life. As at times it become really hard to see your beloved in such a pain.
