Only 100 of 1300 type 1 diabetics in Gambia gets treatment. Many don't even get a diagnose.

Because of the low knowledge about diabetes symptoms, people die. There is also a lack of insulin and glucose meters.

Dr. Alieu Gaye runs the "Pakala Clinic" in the capital of Gambia, Banjul, the only diabetes care center in the whole Gambia. When the State Hospital runs out of syringes and insulin, they send them to the Pakala Clinic.

When I was on a vacation I paid a visit to the clinic. Read the whole story here:

One diabetes patient cost approximately $570 (€ 500 or £ 392) a year.

This is what the money will be used for:

  • Insulin and meters for all the diabetes patients
  • A bigger refrigerator to keep the insulin cool in the hot sub-tropical climate
  • Education of the children to have a future with their diabetes later in life

The clinic also needs long-term collaborations with other diabetes organizations. If you want to help, please contact Dr. Gaye:
