I teach Introduction to Native American Studies at Douglas High School in Winston Oregon. I have 38 students im my class, which is in its 8th year. My class is self supporting in that we raise funds for books, speakers, and field trips through grants and donations. My class is unique in that it is the only class of its kind taught at the secondary level in the US. Students taking my class receive 4 hours of college credit through Southern Oregon University. We will be visiting the Makah, Quileute, Quinault Nations in northern Washington and the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde in central Oregon. The funds raised will be to provide 3 nights lodging and meals for 4 days. We will travel by school district bus so our transportation costs are covered. The distance to the Makah Nation in northern Washington from our origination point in Winston Oregon is approximately 600 miles one way. Once we are at the diofferent nations, we will participate in educational lectures on flinting, tribal histories, dancing and drumming at the Potlatch( Pot Luck), whale watching and other activities planned by each tribe. This field trip has proven to be extremely beneficial to students as they are exposed to cultural diversity and different ways that people live in addition to the knowlege gained about Native peoples in the Northwest. We need to cover the cost of rooms for 30 students ( students share rooms) and all meals. The trip will occur on April 29-May3
