Derick is a well known South African figure in Thailand, as he provides many Saffas (and other expats) with all those goodies we miss from home. He is known as Derick the Biltong Man, as he makes biltong, boerewors, hamburger patties, sosaties and much more at this shop in Jomtien, Pattaya. Unfortunately Derick had a stroke late last month, which has left him paralysed down his right side. He has now been discharged from hospital and needs intensive one on one physiotherapy at home to fully recover. He is unable to walk, feed himself and needs 24 hour care. His prognosis for recovery is good if he receives the necessary treatment. Any donations, small or large will be appreciated.
Today is a good day! Derick is doing so well and improving daily! 🙂 Derick can now shower unassisted with the rails for support and using his shower chair (shower rails and chair donated by Hara). We have bought rails for the stairs to give Derick more support when using the stairs. Going up the stairs is working out fine. With practice he will eventually manage going down the stairs without help. The stairs are very steep. A big thank you to Hara for arranging the installation of the railings for us. 🙂🙏
Derick had his 11th physiotherapy session. Today’s focus was on dynamic standing and balance training. He can now stand up unaided from a sitting position. He is continuing to make excellent progress. Khun Tai has also started the process of helping Derick to learn to climb stairs again.
Derick's right arm is damaged, we are hoping that with therapy and time it will improve. At this stage it is too early to say what the prognosis will be. However his left arm is strong and fully functional.
Our aim is to have Derick walking unassisted with his cane and eventually climbing stairs in the next few therapy sessions.
Once again thank you to all who are involved in his recovery (you know who you are) 😊
We had our second to last physio session today. Derick has made a remarkable recovery and this could not have been possible without all your contributions and support. I just want to thank everyone who donated, your contribution has been well spent.…
Derick is doing very well! Today for the first time he attempted the very steep stairs from his apartment above, down to his shop below. Still a little wobbly, but he will progress with practice.🙂 The new handrails will be put to good use! This is th…
