There is a huge need for dental care in refugee camps across Europe. Dentaid was approached by the Red Cross and asked to send teams of British dental professionals to help the thousands of refugees who are suffering dental pain. By teaming up with HealthPoint Foundation we are able to run volunteering trips to Greece most weekends and longer trips are available too.
The main languages spoken in the camps are Arabic and Kurdish. Some of the refugees act as translators and many more are learning English.
Volunteers will work in a tent in the camp’s medical area to triage, treat and provide aftercare for the refugees. Sometimes this is in tents, sometimes containers and in other times in converted buildings. The majority of patients will require extractions and some refugees have developed complex dental problems since fleeing their homes.
The equipment is basic and conditions are tough but we have the chance to provide pain relieving dental care for people who really need your help. Many of the refugees had first class dental treatment in their home countries but since they were forced to leave their homes they have had little opportunity to clean their teeth and rely on packaged meals delivered by UNHCR as there are no cooking facilities.
I need to raise a minimum of £400 to pay for the trip/equipment etc, but any more money raised will go to the charity to use for facilities on the camp for the refugees so any contribution will be greatly appreciated! Dental aid sends groups out every week to treat patients so the money will be used up quickly.
Thank you for looking at my page and for any donations!
