Deaf Cafe Fingertalk Botswana

Hello from Botswana and Indonesia!

Hi, my name is Tshepis from Gaborone, Botswana. My team and I would like to start the first deaf cafe in Botswana to provide job opportunities for Deaf people and people with disability in Botswana. In addition to that, we hope this cafe would be a great way to encourage hearing people to learn sign language and erase negative perception about people with disability in my country.

Sign language is a very unique way communication and not everyone here in Botswana is interested in learning it except for people who are deaf. Its very sad to find that here in Botswana for deaf people to find or be considered for a job is very difficult and they are unlikely given equal opportunities like other hearing community.

I am coming from a village called Ramotswa where most of deaf schools are based in. I have Deaf friends from the Deaf community. Seeing how they struggle in getting a job made me want to do a project that will change the lives of deaf people for the better.

My friend in Indonesia, Dissa Ahdanisa, who is also working in this campaign with me, has started Deaf Cafe Fingertalk and Car Wash as an innovative solution to create employment for Deaf people in Indonesia. Being Dissa's friend and saw how she changes the lives of deaf people motivated me to also start my own movement to create an impact here in my own country.

Fingertalk Botswana will be created to employ people living with disabilities. We plan to start training the Deaf and albinos since they are the most people we are always interacting with personally here in Botswana. We will also have workshops which will be focused on training people with disability to start their own projects and also equipping them with professional skills and helping them find jobs in other industries.
