Darren’s Family Loss

Dear friends and family –

I am writing in hope of having you join me and Summer in raising funds to help a fellow human being in great need through a very troubled time.  All we will ask of you is whatever you can afford to offer…$5, $10, $25, $50…anything.

Now for the story and explanation…

There is a waterfront Chart House restaurant right down the street from our house that we have had occasion to visit since we moved to Miami, and we had the pleasure of meeting a fine gentleman named Darren upon our first visit. Darren works as the night manager most evenings, which is the only time we go, and is one of those rare men who’s so friendly and kind that you immediately feel as if you’ve known him for years. Over a number of visits (they’re open late, and that works for us), we have become increasingly friendly with Darren and he has shared a bit about his life and family. We came to learn that Darren and his wife, who are very active in their church, have three children, including a wheelchair-ridden 12-year old son who has lived with a severe case of Muscular Dystrophy since birth. It is horrible disease that had rendered him in need of constant care.

Our most recent visit came last month, when we found that Darren had taken a leave of absence from work due to the very unfortunate and young death of his son. While in mourning, their home was broken into twice within a matter of two weeks…the burglars making off with thousands of dollars of electronics, jewelry, and more. To hear this story about our friend (and a man so kind) upset us deeply and left us wanting to help. No one should have to bear such tragedy. Such tragedy in someone’s life should not be left without support and assistance. Quite simply, the injustice of the talen had an impact on us.

We want to help, and are hoping to rally some communal assistance that may create a bright spot for a family suffering through a dark time, helping them with the costs from their son’s funeral, prior medical expenses, the replacement of their stolen property, etc. If you would like to join us in contributing, please do so by giving whatever you can give…even a dollar.
