Dear Friends and Family,
Dan finished all his class work last spring after 9 years of being a full time student! In May his dissertation topic was approved and he has begun writing! Lord willing he will have his PH.D in Semitic and Egyptian Languages of the Ancient Near East in the next few years. In celebration of his dedication to his studies and desire to serve the Lord through teaching I would love to surprise him by sending him to the Society of Biblical Literature which is being hosted this year in Atlanta, Georgia. This is something that Dan talks about every year and how he wishes he could go. By attending SBL Dan will not only have the opportunity to be surrounded by the largest assembly of scholars from around the world who dedicate themselves to the study of the scriptures and religion around the world and glean many things from them but also it is greatly beneficial for him to make connections and build relationships with these scholars. For 4 days there are meeting varying from religion and the traditions associated with those religions, ethics and philosophy. All of this enables people like Dan to not only understand and teach the scriptures more accurately but gives a platform of sharing the truth of the scripture with people from varying religious backgrounds. Being well versed in older and current scholarship gives Dan great enjoyment and he thrives on it. Dan has written an article and has submitted it for publication and he has several other topics he would like to write and submit to scholarly papers after he has finished his dissertation. If Dan were able to make it to The Society of Biblical Literature this year it would mean the world to him. However, it is a very costly trip and I can’t do it alone! After the plane ticket, registration fee, hotel room and food it will be around $1,000. Unfortunately, with all of our moving over the past 7 years I have not been able to have a graduation party for him (bachelors, 2 masters and soon to be doctorate). Please help me show Dan how proud we are of him and all that he has accomplished over the years and his continuing desire to serve the Lord with the gifts and talents he has been blessed with! Thank you from the bottom of my heart to help me make this trip possible for Dan! Thank you!
