Hello! My name is Dani, and I’m a Filipino songwriter & I've teamed up with Anakbayan to fundraise & raise awareness on systemic privilege with a song called Space. All proceeds for this fundraiser will go to helping out new filipino immigrants & first generation families with start up & mental health costs.

I wrote this song with my friends during the pandemic bc I am someone who has a hard time taking up space and wrote "Space" to help me explore my intersectional identity and the reality of the barriers to access I face through systemic discrimination as a first generation immigrant, someone with disabilities, chronic illness, mental illnesses & as a member of the LGBTQ+ Community. I often feel I have to work harder than others more privileged than myself, fighting against a system that feels determined to keep me out. It is an incredibly alienating, as such- I created this song to speak more on how it feels.

Knowing how hard it is to fight those barriers to access, I hope to be able to fundraise funds to help alleviate those barriers to access & take the edge off helping people from my own community with access to mental health services, food, clothing and groceries.

The money raised would go to these two organizations:

CANADA

MRCC (Migrants Resource Centre Canada)
The Migrants Resource Centre Canada aims to improve the lives of migrant and immigrant workers by advancing their rights and dignity while working and living in Canada. MRCC upholds migrant workers as key actors in the pursuit of this goal. Its role is to assist in capacity building and cooperative action towards full participation in Canadian society. They provide Education and Training, Information and Referral, and Research and Advocacy to engage the filipino community.

PHILIPPINES

NFSW (National Federation of Sugar Workers)
The National Federation of Sugar Workers was formed in 1971. Negros is known as the sugar bowl of the Philippines and sugar plantation is the economic base of that island. During the time of COVID-19, joblessness, hunger become rampant in the community and it affected the economy on that particular Island. Moreso, the COVID-19 pandemic adds-up to the already miserable condition of the sugar- farmworkers. Although there’s no restriction in working in hacienda’s because the economy is down economy due to pandemic, landlords limit workers in the field and on “pakyaw” or piece-rate basis. They only received an average income of P200 to P300 every 15 days which could not suffice to a family in their need for basic necessities. Since 2019 there is no wage increase for the sugar farm workers. There's further info about the situation of Negros here.
