SYNOPSIS
Daniel Munro (Armand Aucamp) is a mysterious, wealthy young man from the
city, who ends up at a road stall in the middle of the barren Tankwa Karoo (semi-desert
in South Africa). His car broke down and with roadside assistance only
able to send someone out the following Monday, he is forced to spend the
weekend at the road stall. The stall is run by Cornelius Theron (Callie Theron); a
wise, old, Afrikaans man, with a different view on life than Daniel. Things at the
stall then suddenly heat up when two detectives decide to show up. A story with
strong themes of ignorance and arrogance, love and tragedy.

THEME
The dangers of the money driven society we are living in and how money can’t
buy happiness. One man’s journey of becoming the man he was intended to be.

MOOD
A Comedy Drama with quirky elements. A story rich in comedy as well as
tragedy. Interesting mannerisms of the contrasting and unique characters are
placed against the epic and awe-awakening backdrop of the great Karoo desert
landscapes.

TALLENT INVOLVED:

1. DANIEL MUNRO
– Played by Armand AUCAMP

Even though Daniel is handsome, intelligent and charming, he is most definitely
seen as the passive antagonist with external as well as internal conflict and his
ignorance will bring him to a downfall.

Armand AUCAMP is an incredibly talented and well-known actor locally and
internationally, who stared in international features such as Chronicle (2012),
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013), and more recently, well-known
American TV-Drama Homeland.

2. CORNELIUS THERON
– Played by Callie THERON

Although Cornelius comes forth as stubborn and a bit surly, he has learned to
always help where possible and never be selfish. He has a good heart and
always willing to share his knowledge with those passing by. He can be seen as
the passive protagonist as well as the archetypical mentor.

Callie THERON is as close to Cornelius’ character as possible. With him being
born in the Karoo himself and almost living the exact same life as his character,
Cornelius. This creates a very believable, authentic and genuine character. His
dialect is also exactly the same as the dialect from that region which also
contributes to the authenticity of the film.

3. JEROME JANUARY
– Played by Irshaad ALLY

Jerome is a smart, well educated, but witty, guy in his early 30’s, working as a
detective in the South African Police Service. He is hardworking, energetic and
full of courage, but even though he takes his work very seriously, still a bit naive.
Growing up in an environment filled with drugs and violence, he is determent in
what he does and strongly believes in justice and creating a better and safer
society.

Irshaad ALLY is just as well known and has been on the scene for quite a
while now, delivering excellent performance in international cinema such as
the multi-award winning film Four Corners (2013) and Emmy Award winning series Homeland

4. CHRISJAN VISAGIE
– Played by Stiaan SMITH

Chrisjan is a quirky, but serious detective who was send down from Johannesburg
by the South African Police Service to partner with Sergeant Jerome, on what
might just be their biggest case yet. His excitement for his work is well noticed
and his seriousness for his job to such an extend that it almost becomes comedic.
They are both very determent in what they do and will do anything possible to
solve their case.

“Stiaan SMITH is an award-winning actor and writer for both screen and stage.
He has performed in theater, commercials and film, and works in English and
Afrikaans. After training in film at AFDA (Johannesburg) he acquired a B.Com
(Finance) degree at the University of Johannesburg. To date, his work includes
lead and supporting roles in feature length and short films, web series and stage
plays.” - www.stiaansmith.com

Some of his featured work includes Sleeper’s Wake (2012), which was an official
selection at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival.

ORIGINAL SCORE & MUSIC

An original score will be composed by award winning South African music composer, Peach van Pletzen.

The soundtrack will also include music from well known South African Melodic Rock band, aKing.

IN CONCLUSION

I, Willem van den Heever, am graduating from The Open Window Institute of Film Arts end of 2015, and with this being my 4th short film, I am planning on making it my last short film, before moving to the US in 2016 to start working on my first future length film.

Not only does the film take place in a very unique and special part of South Africa, but it will also shine a light on the beautiful landscapes and people of the Karoo. In fact I have become so interested in this part of the country that I have already started with pre-production and have traveled through that part for several days in order to location scout and do research on the people there.

The money donated will be used for important aspects such as travel and accommodation, location fees, hiring of equipment, paying of talent and post production.

With a total estimated budget of $5000 for the film, any amount of donation will be highly appreciated and I will assure you, with the current team already on board and with all my previous films having received international recognition, including organizations such as SUNDANCE, this is a project well worth investing in and something you will not regret being part of.
