Councilman Jones is in a frantic search for an attorney to file an appeal to keep his seat. Your support is needed. Daniel Jones is a pillar of this community. He devotes his time to the people of Rolla. He has been serving on city council since 2018. His seat is being threatened with false allegations. There is a reason he was elected onto city council by the people for the people. If these allegations were valid, he would have never been elected in the first place. This is a man who has served our country in the military, has taken it upon himself to stand up for those in the community who feel their voices aren't heard. Whether that being a veteran, business owners, or a resident with insight on how to benefit Rolla in general. He has only ever gone out of his way for others. WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Complaint from pastor sparked Jones’ qualification investigation

Documents filed in circuit court by Phelps County Prosecuting Attorney Brendon Fox on Tuesday allege Ward 1 Rolla city councilman Daniel Jones is unlawfully holding office due to previously pleading guilty to a marijuana-related felony in 2012.

A preliminary order in quo warrant to filed with the case formally gives Jones 10 days to respond to Fox’s petition or face removal from office.

Jones told Phelps County Focus during a Tuesday interview that he plans to dispute the allegations in court and will not resign his council seat.

Complaint from pastor sparked Jones’ qualification investigation

Phelps County Prosecuting Attorney Brendon Fox reported to Phelps County Focus on Monday the investigation as to whether Rolla City Councilman Daniel Jones is lawfully qualified to hold elected office was launched after a citizen complaint was filed with his office.

Per a subsequent Sunshine request from Phelps County Focus, Fox provided a copy of that complaint. It is written by then Greentree Christian Church Senior Pastor Timothy O. Cook and printed on church letterhead. Cook retired from that post last month.

The Cook complaint was filed on May 28 when the Rolla City Council was entertaining an ordinance to establish a 300-foot buffer prohibiting medical marijuana dispensaries from operating around a church, school or daycare.

The Cook complaint states in full:

“My wife and I have lived & served in Rolla for 37 years. We love this community. But some unhealthy changes have developed in recent years.

I have been following the issue of proposed location restrictions for medical marijuana dispensaries for the Rolla area with much concern. I see that the proposal of a 0-300-foot buffer zone from schools, churches, and daycare facilities is to be voted on by our city council on Monday evening, June 3, 2019.

It has come to my attention that Daniel Jones, a city council member and leading proponent of this measure, has a drug related felony history and is legally ineligible to:

1. Serve on the city council (or any other public office)

2. Present proposals for consideration

3. Vote of said proposals

(section 115.306.1)

I feel this issue has been intentionally fast tracked. Our citizens have not been heard. I would ask that Daniel Jones would be removed from the Rolla City Council as ineligible, and that as such the current 0-300-foot buffer zone vote for medical marijuana dispensaries be tabled. My preference would be that such business only be allowed outside city limits.

Cook would personally deliver the opening prayer prior to the June 3 city council meeting on behalf of the ministerial alliance. The council later that evening amended its ordinance to approve a larger 500-foot buffer prohibiting a medical marijuana dispensary from operating around a church, school or daycare.

  • Thank you Daniel for being the voice of reason, and proponent of medical marajuana education! I believe fear and lack of knowledge are our biggest hurdles. I appreciate your perseverance and abhor your prosecution.
