Damian Andreas 'Yaz' Cortez, was born on November 16, 2010. He turned 11 on November 2021. He loves drawing and playing the digital piano. Like any other kid his age, he enjoys gaming (Apex Legends, Genshin, Fallout Shelter) and is pretty good at it. He excels in school and is an active and healthy child with his whole life ahead of him.

In December of 2021, he started complaining of stomach pains. Following several medical consultations and diagnostic tests, it was found out that his liver was enlarged and underwent medication.

In January of 2022, his maternal grandfather, Papa Leo, was diagnosed with Esophageal Cancer. A month after, Papa Leo succumbed peacefully after a short battle with the disease. This has taken its toll on the family, emotionally and financially.

In April of 2022, Yaz presented more symptoms: bones and joint pain, night sweats, fatigue, weight loss of more that 20% his body weight and persistent abdominal swelling. A series of tests revealed an enlargement of the liver, spleen, lymph nodes and abnormal blood cells. These were already signs of a deeper condition, but we, the family, remained hopeful for a positive outcome.

On May 4, 2022, he underwent bone marrow aspiration and biopsy confirming our worst fears. He was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (A.L.L.).

Yaz is currently going through Induction Chemotherapy and will continue with the intensive and aggressive treatment plan for the next few months. The regimen will approximately last for three years but will still depend on his response to the treatments. We are hopeful that he will beat the odds and pass the 5-year mark. Yaz is presently confined at St. Luke's Medical Center, Quezon City.

It has been a rough time for us and if you have read through this, we humbly reach out for your kindness to make it easier. Your financial support will help sustain his medical treatments and give him a fighting chance to survive his condition.

Our Family offers you our deepest debt of gratitude.

  • Hi Yaz, si ninang Jing, fight anak ha? You are in my prayers. Believe me when I say this is the hardest for me as a nurse, to wonder and ask God why children? But it hasn’t stopped me from caring for sick kids in the pediatric ER. I guess you can say this is how I make up for it, for what is lacking in the suffering of Christ, bold statement ni St Paul yan. There is a reason and a bigger picture we don’t see right now. But eventually God reveals himself in our struggles and hopefully we will understand. I love you Yaz all the way from Vegas! Hope to see you soon😘, for now we will surrender this to the Lord.
