Our main aim here at BHZ Connection is to contribute to the educational development of young people and adolescents from low-income families by teaching languages including Portuguese and foreign languages (English, French, Spanish, etc.) using activities such as drama, Capoeira Angola, art, educational games, reading, music and physical education the students learn, thereby facilitating cultural exchange with volunteers from different countries.Currently we have over 280 students at BHZ Connection aged between 6 and 18 years old (from the communities of Alto Vera Cruz, Vera Cruz, Saudade, Taquaril, Sao Gerardo, Granja de Freitas, among others in Belo Horizonte).
The above communities are characterised by inequalities, little access to cultural and leisure activities, high rate of juvenile violence, presence of drug trafficking, high rate of truancy, teenage pregnancy and low educational attainment and aspiration. Most residents are employed in the lowest-skilled and most precarious jobs on the job market place: e.g. housekeeper, maid, cleaner, cashier, construction worker. Most of the income is used for food and payment of bills, with negligible spending on health, transport, education and leisure. There is an increasing lack of provision in childcare, physical and educational activities, options for after-school hours, therefore these children and adolescents remain alone most of the day, without the company and direct parental supervision, and are at risk of staying on the streets.
We have provided a safe and positive environment for these vulnerable people since 2010 and are going from strength to strength with all aspects, especially our language classes.
Specifically, we are now fundraising so that these children can keep their language programmes going and some of the most committed and driven will have the incredible opportunity to visit the United Kingdom as part of a cultural exchange. Providing these underprivileged children with experiences and aspirations on a global scale is the next step in their education to encourage them to make the most of the opportunities available to them while opening up many, many more to them along the way. Not to mention, the ability to speak another language is, and always will be, a passport to a better future for these kids, helping them to reduce the impact of their economic situation through education.
Anything you can spare will be hugely appreciated by the children at BHZ Connection.
