Cultivating the Future: Empowering Youth through Nutrition Education

What if, with just one seed, a child could be empowered to make healthier lifestyle choices and be supported to use their imagination to attain their goals?

That's what "Cultivating the Future: Empowering Youth through Nutrition Education" seeks to do.

The "Cultivating the Future" platform encourages youth to take a greater interest in learning about their food and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle through hands-on activities. These activities allow the children to take pride in their work, learn how to become stewards of the environment, and use their imagination. At the grass-roots level, I work with School Boards to implement a three-tier program to bring a holistic approach to nutrition into the classroom.

As part of the program, children have the opportunity to grow fruits and vegetables in their classroom setting on a small scale level. Students are not only exposed to the biological needs of plants and the science of the environment, but also foster a sense of pride in growing a project of their own. Children fully learn to appreciate nutritious foods when they are empowered to ask questions in a safe environment about the story behind where their food comes from and how it’s made. By fostering an environment of inquisitive thinking regarding food, children can build confidence in their food choices and better understand how to fully research their ideas.

Educational efforts have allowed my platform to empower all ages through leadership development, political action, and community involvement focused on nutrition and agricultural education. Media coverage of platform events has allowed national support my platform efforts as well as encouraged other communities to empower childhood nutritional education.

The funds raised are used for the promotion and implementation of the "Cultivating the Future" platform. For instance, funds are used to purchase raw materials such as seeds, soil, and presentation materials. Further, funds help support logistical costs such as travel, and promotional endeavors beyond those that are donated by the community.
