La principal causa de pérdida de visión en niños se puede tratar simplemente con un parche a esta edad. Imagina que no tienes acceso a ello.

La ambliopía estrábica es una enfermedad en la que se pierde agudeza visual en la infancia porque los ojos no están bien alineados, y el cerebro suprime la información visual del desviado.

En Europa es un problema que se resuelve desde la infancia por medio de un seguimiento continuo y un tratamiento sencillo (uso de un parche en el ojo sano para forzar al enfermo a corregir la posición) y eficaz en edad pediátrica.

Sin embargo, esa no es la realidad en India. Aquí, hasta un 5% de los niños sufren estrabismo pero no se toman las medidas oportunas para evitarlo, por lo que los pacientes alcanzan una edad a la que la enfermedad se vuelve irreversible.

Es por eso que desde el IIMC (Institute for Indian Mother and Child) estamos promoviendo un programa de cribado de estrabismo en población infantil, de forma que podamos detectar a tiempo el problema y tratarlo cuando aún es corregible.

Desgraciadamente, aquí no disponen de medios suficientes para poder cubrir a la población pediátrica con parches. Es por eso que hemos iniciado esta campaña hasta el 30 de julio, ya que es cuando el grupo de voluntarios cambia y toma las riendas otro grupo que podrá continuar con el proyecto hasta que se implante aquí definitivamente.

Si llegamos a la cantidad de 300€ podremos comprar más de 2000 parches. Con esta pequeña ayuda, puede comenzar un gran proyecto que, a la larga, mejore la salud de la población infantil aquí, en Calcuta.

The main cause of lost of vision in children can be treated only with a patch. Imagine not having access to it.

Strabic amblyopia is a disease in which vision acuity is lost in childhood because both eyes are not well lined-up, and brain inhibits the information from the deviated one.

In Europe this is a problem with an easy solution since childhood, with a continuous check-up and a treatment based in occlusion of the healthy eye to force the wrong one to get the right position.

However, that's not the situation in India. Here, until a 5% of the children suffers from strabismus, but good decisions are not taken, so people achieve an age when it is impossible to treat it.

That's the reason why from IIMC (Institute for Indian Mother and Child) we are promoting a screening programme for strabismus in children, so that we can detect the problem earlier and deal with it when it's still treatable.

Unfortunately, they do not have all the resources here to cover the population with patches. Because of this, we have started this campaign until 30th of july, when this group of volunteers leave, another group comes, and this group can continue with the project until it is implemented here.

If we achieve the amount of 300€ we are going to be capable of buying more than 2000 patches. Thanks to this little help, a great project can start and we can somehow change the health of many children here, in Kolkata.
