Creative Heart Project – TUVALU

Last month I traveled to a nation that I had never heard of - Tuvalu. It is a nation under threat from climate change and rising seas. Beautiful Tuvalu made an incredible impact on me and as a result I have been motivated to raise awareness of this little heard of nation. My first campaign is to raise funds for an outdoor play gym for a local preschool.

The name we have given to this effort is the 'Creative Heart Project'. It was inspired by a little 'heart' activity I did with some of the local Tuvaluan preschools. It starts with a question for us all to reflect on 'what makes my heart happy?', next is craft time - we create our hearts (with the help of the lovely teachers) and then we come together to share our heart crafts and talk about what makes all our hearts happy. This was then followed by uplifting local song and dance by the beautiful kids (as shown in the video)! It will come as no surprise that this is what 'made my heart happy'!

Today, the kids at Suesue Memorial Preschool, while so happy and resourceful, play outside kicking old coke cans or playing in the dirt. The principal and teachers asked if I could help them source an outdoor play gym for these precious kids. Without doubt I knew this was something I could absolutely make happen for this preschool community!

Last Saturday my beautiful friend Bronnie donated one of her Create With Us workshops to support the cause. It was such a special and fun day! Thank you so much Bronnie and to those that could join us in person (and in spirit)! It was our mission to make lots of extra clay heart key rings (see below) so that everyone who donated could receive one of this handmade hearts!

The play gym will set sail from a wharf in Brisbane on 23rd April and is expected to arrive in Tuvalu within 3-4 weeks. A launch ceremony is being planned by the preschool. I will share that story with you in June!
