Creation of a bee and butterfly sanctuary.

Bees and butterflies are some of the most important animals to both nature and humans, yet their numbers are in decline everywhere. Beekeepers have been noticing their honeybee populations have been dying off at increasingly rapid rates. Solitary bee and butterfly species are becoming increasingly endangered. Some populations have been reduced by half in only 6 years.

There are several causes for this, such as habitat loss and the increased use of insecticides. If action is not taken, and safe living places are not provided for these animals, pollination will be greatly reduced. Plants and animals who rely on them, such as most fruit and flowering plants, will no longer be able to survive as a result. The loss of nature and agriculture will be catastrophic.

I have decided to try and do whatever I can to help solve this problem. Through crowdfunding I hope to gather enough recourses to buy a patch of land and create a bee and butterfly sanctuary where bees and butterflies can live in peace and safety. The sanctuary will in essence be a large park, open to the public during daytime. People will be able to visit and observe the beauty of nature. Information will be available inside the sanctuary so people can learn how to help the environment in their own garden or home. The sanctuary will contain mainly plant species that are native to the local environment. This will ensure that bee or butterfly species which only visit specific plant species native to the local area will also have a place here. Special attention will also be given to nesting and hibernation spaces. Altogether this should help the populations in the local area, but could also be a modal to people everywhere. People that visit can be inspired to take action themselves, in their own gardens, and will have the knowledge they need to do just that.

I have a degree in ecology and own an ecological gardening company. I will use this expertise and knowledge to create and maintain the sanctuary with my own bare hands. This should minimize the cost of building, and increase the amount I can spent on land size so the sanctuary can be as large as possible. It has always been my dream to do this.
