I have been inspired by my helper to create a community vegetable garden.
Her son, Mario, is 23 year old and lives with her in the township of Alexandra in Johannesburg. He has been unable to find employment since completing his Grade 12. Last week he tried to commit suicide as he feels hopeless about his future.
This got me to thinking about how many other young adults are struggling in South Africa, and specifically in my area to find employment. The only way for them to find employment is to create new jobs. I am an elderly pensioner with little means but have taken it upon myself to find a way to give our future leaders a ray of light and to pave a way into the future.
This garden project will create several jobs, such as compost makers, food garden managers and trainers for home gardening. It will empower people not only economically by enabling them to gain income, but also politically by allowing them to participate in the shaping of their community. This garden project will also serve as a multi-purpose project, by feeding or giving resources for a sustainable, healthy life to a underprivileged community.
Please help me to give Mario a reason for living.
