Hi, I'm Yong Liang, or more commonly known in the Singapore mountain biking community as Willy. I have been riding mountain bikes for almost 7 years now. Ever since I entered my first mountain bike race in 2013, I haven't stopped since.
I was recruited into the Singapore mountain bike national team after clinching the National Championship title in the Cross-country Olympic (XCO) discipline in 2015. Since then, I have donned the national colours at the Asian Mountain BIke Championships every year.
This year I have been blessed with the opportunity to represent Singapore in Cairns, Queensland, Australia at the UCI MTB World Championships (5-10 Sep 2017) as part of a Singaporean contingent consisting of 6 riders. However, all Singaporean athletes are required to self-fund this entire trip, and I am (unfortunately) just a broke college student. Hence, I am turning to the power of the crowd to help defray the costs of this adventure!
Thus far, I have incurred SGD795.50 on my return tickets (thank you Qantas sale!).
Other expenses I will be incurring:
Additional baggage for bike, spares and rollers - Qantas charges AUD610 each way for an additional 25kg check-in. For the same cost, I am looking for a family member who is available to travel with me to Cairns with the additional equipment I require.
Accomodation - We found an AirBnb that would cost SGD800 per pax
Transport - As we are travelling with quite a bit of sporting equipment and would need to travel to-and-fro our lodging, the airport and the race venue with all of that. The contingent will be renting two vehicles and splitting the cost of the rentals and gas among ourselves.
Daily Expenses (e.g. Food, Water)
Every bit counts, please, if you wish, kindly donate to support my trip to Cairns!
In the off-chance that proceeds from this fund-raising campaign exceeds the expenses I have incurred during the trip, I will donate them to Qhubeka.org, a South African not-for-profit organisation that donates bicycles as part of the World Bicycle Relief's charity programme in South Africa.
