Campaign Story
After the Lamu Yoga Festival in beginning of March 2020, the tourism in Lamu Island, Kenya, has completely stopped due to the Corona virus crisis. Lamu island is 100% depending on tourism and therefore many people lost their jobs and income.
Lamu Yoga Organisation and Banana House take responsibility to help the local community, especially young girls who are the most vulnerable, to overcome these hard times. That is why we will support the Shela Bright Secondary Girls school, based in Shela village, which has over 200 students from Lamu Island. Banana House and Lamu Yoga have been partnering with this school for past 10 years, during that time we have supported the school with new classrooms, study materials and equipment, and giving yoga classes and creating awareness on health among the girls. At this point due to Corona virus pandemic the school is closed but the girls need our support now more than ever.
Together with the school administration we have identified the most vulnerable girls and their families whom we want to support with Wellbeing Kits, which contains basic food and hygiene supplies that will help them to overcome the current situation.
Each Wellbeing Kit for one girl and her family, contains following:
- Food supplies: flour, maize, rice, beans, cooking oil, salt
- Hygiene supplies: soap, reusable sanitary pads
- Guidelines on proper handwashing, Covid-19 prevention and menstrual hygiene
The cost of one Wellbeing Kit is 25$
With your help we can raise 2500$ and help 100 girls and their families.

Warm memories of the Lamu festival and especially of the local people living at Shela! Sometimes it feels like it was all a dream! Nice to meet you Monika and great job organising the festival for so many years. I hope my small donation will be helpful, to support the Lamu girls and their families. PS: if you meet Mr. Happy, greet him from us! I don't remember his name, but he took us on his little boat during the dhow sunset sail, when there was no space left on the big dhows. We communicated by singing to each other throughout the trip, it was amazing! Lots of Love and Light to you and all the people of Lamu!
