Give Food to Families in Kenya to overcome COVID-19

Summary

Youth Initiative Development Programme is responding to COVID-19 in Korogocho Slum Nairobi, Kenya by supporting vulnerable families affected by pandemic in Korogocho slums with food vouchers, providing handwashing stations for the wider community, distributing information, and producing face masks to help stop the spread of the virus in Korogocho.

Challenge

Taking measures to stop the spread of COVID-19 in Korogocho is particularly difficult. Social distancing is a challenge in homes where 5 or more people live in one small room. Regular handwashing adds extra costs as families buy water by the bucket. Schools are closed and children who normally rely on the free meals they get at school are going hungry. Many families normally rely on casual labour for their income and many are losing their jobs at this time. The market has been demolished and some houses, the eviction has taken place when COVID-19 is still on the rise.

Solution

We're providing food vouchers to the most vulnerable families among the more than 150 families affected by the pandemic through our education and sports programmes. We're asking your support to distribute food voucher during this time of economic crisis. Face masks are now recommended when social distancing is not possible, we're working with local tailors to produce and distribute simple cloth face masks along with instructions on how to use them correctly.

Long-Term Impact

We are supporting the most vulnerable families to weather this pandemic. We're joining in the community effort to flatten the curve in Kenya as a whole and Korogocho specifically.
