Covid-19 Relief for Bukit Lawang workers

Covid-19 is impacting the whole world. But it is being especially hard for an Indonesian community of forest guides from the rural village of Bukit Lawang, Sumatra.

This community, and especially its young workers, used to rely heavily on tourism for its livelihood. The rain forest surrounding the beautiful Bukit Lawang is one of the few places in the world where it is possible to see Orangutans in the wild. Young workers there used to make a living by guiding tourists coming from all over the world into the depth of the rain forest tracking the Orangutans and explaining the habits of these fascinating animals and other local flora and fauna.
This type of job gives an opportunity to the local youth to work to promote conservation of the rain forest habitat, instead of working in the numerous Palm Oil plantations which are threatening to take over the Sumatran forest.

With the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic, Tourism has been completely halted in Bukit Lawang, leaving the community struggling to make eds meet.

This fundraiser aims at sustaining 25 Bukit Lawang guides in their day to day expenses like food and gas, waiting for the travel restrictions to be lifted and for tourism to pick up again.

The average cost of living for a Bukit Lawang resident is roughly 10 CHF (10$) a day so every little contribution counts.
