Coronavirus COVID-19: GIVING HOPE

We have created the Coronavirus COVID-19: GIVING HOPE campaign aimed at helping people in need who are being overlooked during the lockdown period in South Africa. Urgent requests and calls for food, toiletries, bedding, masks and other basic goods are being posted daily on social media groups as well as various Whatsapp CAN (Community Action Network) groups.

It is disheartening for us to see all the requests for help and not be able to assist physically or financially beyond our means. Thankfully the government and many individuals and organisations have jumped in and are helping wherever they can, but it seems overwhelming because of the millions of people living on or way below the breadline. With winter upon us, soon the suffering will increase. Businesses have closed down and are unable to pay their staff. People have lost their jobs and are often single breadwinners in households of multiple family members. We've only been in lockdown for a few days but expect it to get much more difficult for people as days go by. Even after the lockdown, which might be extended, the suffering will continue and it will take months if not years for most people to recover from this crisis.

Alison and I have given food, bedding and contributed to a few organisations as far as we could and will continue to do so. Our goal with the Giving Hope campaign is to identify where money is needed most and where we see an honest need arise, donate from the funds we've raised. Our focus is mainly in Cape Town but we'll also look at requests from elsewhere in South Africa.

We would like to ask friends and people who can lend financial support during this time to open their hearts and help us to assist some people in South Africa who are in dire need by giving them a bit of hope in this very difficult time.
