During 2020 Covid-19 left widespread traces of fear and uncertainty throughout the whole world. Statistics show that the world at large experienced elevated levels of depression, mental illness and suicidal ideation during 2020. Humanity is in desperate need of support. Everyone is affected in some way or another.
My name is Yolanda Kuun. I am a student counsellor. I have 20 years' art experience. In South Africa, art education is a luxury. It is available to those who can afford to pay for it. My vision is to see art removed from the 'list-of-luxuries', offering it freely to individuals. I have seen great need within the lives of children and the elderly while they too feel the negative effects of life and now the Corona virus. While I was doing charity work in 2020, I have been physically involved by providing food and emotional care to the community of Mokopane, Limpopo Province, South Africa. Children are lonely. The elderly feel rejected. I have been confronted with the feelings of abandonment and loneliness which the elderly experience as their family are not able to visit them.
After seeing this need which can not be ignored, I have devoted my time and efforts to help answer someone's call. It is by offering emotional, physical and psychological support to the children in a Special-Need school (Down Syndrome school) and the elderly in our town's old age home through the creativity of art and counselling. Loneliness has affected all of humanity, especially the children and elderly in our community. As an artist, I experience the therapeutic and healing effects art provides, and I am inspired to share my knowledge and experience with others who, firstly, are in desperate need of emotional help and any kind of counselling, and secondly, all who do not have the funds to pay for such a service - a service where I combine art and counselling to alleviate pain, reduce stress and bring hope to children and the elderly. I am going out and bringing this service to them, just where they are, at no cost to them.
Your financial partnership will also enable me to decorate the Old Age home, using art, decor and murals to create a peaceful sanctuary where the elderly can spend their days and enjoy the environment they live in. This Old age home takes care of about 75 elderly, full time. I will also be enabled to art education to the less fortunate in our community, including children of all ages.
When you financially partner with me to benefit this cause, I will be able to add value to the lives of special needs children and the elderly and provide this service continuously to them for free. I am not only able to provide mental and emotional support, but every piece of art equipment, including sketch pads, paint, canvas, etc. at no cost to the community. It is a free service I offer. With the funds donated I am able to devote my time and effort, and to purchase all the equipment needed and used by the children and elderly during the creative-care sessions.
My goal is to use the gift of art and counselling to help less privileged individuals live meaningful and purposeful lives, wherever they are.
