- Everybody in Kibera needs the same opportunities to go to school, to start businesses, to have enough to eat, to have decent clothes. The slum, located at the outskirts of Nairobi, suffers from extreme poverty, poor sanitation, little access to healthcare, clean water scarcity, and widespread malnutrition. One of the focal efforts to uplift the community has been through attempting to improve the education of Kibera’s children, with the idea that formal education would allow the inhabitants to acquire higher-paying, more skilled jobs, circulating more money back to solve problems within the slum.
- Currently, there are both public and ‘private’ schools in Kibera, though neither is entirely without fees. The public schools are run by the government, with support from other nations, and the ‘private’ schools are community startups with the intention of making schools more accessible for those who cannot afford or get into the more expensive and competitive state-run schools.
- Born Star vision center is a community based organization located and serving in Kibera. More challenges facing Kibera include; terrible living conditions due to poor housing structures, environmental degradation, unemployment, school dropout, orphans, drug abuse, teenage pregnancies, and domestic violence among other challenges.
- Born star vision center was established to help solve some of these challenges. For this reason we came up with a children center where we provide kindergaden education, meals, clothes, learning materials and a rescue center for orphans and children from domestic violent homes, rape, among other struggles children from poor backgrounds experience. We have a population of about 100 children
- The meals we provide help curb malnutrition and nutrition deficiency diseases in children and also increase school attendance rates since many children fail to attend school because of lack of food. On education, we give our children a loving, caring, safe and effective environment for them to acquire the academic foundation they require for them to realize their future goals since education is the only weapon we can use to fight poverty as it was clearly stated by Nelson Mandela.
- Our center was initially located along the railway line but was later demolished by the railway authority as they were reclaiming their land. This left us with no option but to rent a hall where we continue serving our children and community at large, though the space is not enough for us to carry out our mandate accordingly.
- Consequently, Bornstar vision Center has the vision of purchasing its own land so as to expand the center and also establish a vocational training center that can equip the young mothers who for some reason dropped out of school, got children but have no substantial source of income that can help them provide for their children.
- The vocational and education Center will be a great milestone in improving the standards of living of Kibera residents. It will be a game changer that will make sure that young girls who lack funds to proceed with their education or got early teenage pregnancies get the chance to acquire skills which can help them employ themselves thus raising their living standards.
- We shall also have a youth mentorship and empowerment programs that can enable them to be responsible enough and shun drug abuse that yields vices such as rape, school dropout and irresponsible sexual behavior.
