My friend Carlos Pedroso is a fencing champion. He fenced the epee, not the sabre, but he's still a champion to me. Twenty years ago, at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, he screwed up the Men's Individual Epee event, but he made up for it big time with his teammates a few days later, by winning bronze medal in the Men's Epee Team event for Cuba.
I saw Carlos win the medal live in Sydney, even though I didn't understand epee fencing back then. We caught up again recently - like I caught up with many old friends - since I got sick with COVID.
Soon after we got back in touch. Carlos got some issues of his own to deal with, His house in Cienfeugos was almost completely destroyed by tropical storm Laura. I promised to help Carlos find money to rebuild his house. It's going to cost an estimated $15,000 AUD. The builders are giving him a good deal because he's a fencing champion. But its still a lot of money for Carlos. He spent his savings buying medicine for his mother, who died of cancer earlier this year.
I've given him some money, but I spent all my money fencing all my life, so I can only help so much. I'm hoping you can help a little bit too. A little bit can go a long way in these situations, I find.
