Pottery and Wall Art Making from discarded Paper Clay while adding environmental value

Dear Friends

I am kindly writing and appealing to support my useless paper materials clay project on pottery and Wall Art making for income and adding environmental value.

My name is Cyriacus Mababu from Tanzania. I am currently working as self-made entrepreneur in the art industry. My current expertise is in Pottery and Wall Art from discarded paper clay.

It's generally better to upcycle waste paper materials than burning or throwing them away. However, where there are recycling mechanisms and innovation, throwing and dumping should be the worst option.

My paper clay art project is an inspiration skill development to students, children and individuals that helps to create income, self employment while adding environmental values. As a volunteer, I am running entrepreneurship project at a Ngara District Focal College (public) on turning waste paper materials into something valuable while adding environmental value.

My project goal is $1,800. The project has already started with one public Vocational development college and one artist group. The first phase with college entrepreneurship unit has already taken place on the paper material upcycling basics. The next phase will be on paper clay skill and pottery making. So 30% of this fund will be spent on training these two groups. And 70% of the funds will go to workshop tools and working gears including molding materials, drying materials, paints and increase man power especially when the workshop is busy on training. Participants from both college and art group will be involved in going out to do demonstration and selling their art work while raising awareness on environmental and resource conservation.

Tanzania has over 9,000,000 million households, over 3,100 health institutions, over 4,500 schools and colleges. They all have garbage pits and all burn discarded paper materials almost one to two times a week depending upon the size of institution and duties performed. Can you imagine how much smoke goes into the air for just a single year?

Mean while, Ngara district has over 800 institutions including primary and secondary schools, health centers, public offices, office and school materials suppliers, wholesale and retail shops, pharmacies, and local tea and coffee shops. This statistics is excluding households in the district. The average discarded papers materials in the district per institution is 0.5 kg per day, over all institutions per day is 400kg , 2 tones per week, 8 tons per month and 96 tons a year. All these tons are burnt out hence increasing gas emissions.

Recycling one ton of paper can save 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 380 gallons of oil, 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space and 4,000 kilowatts of energy enough to power the average U.S. home for six months and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one metric ton of carbon equivalent (MTCE).

The most significant benefits and outcome of this project is that youth and artists will have acquired good knowledge and skills on environment conservation, reduction of gas emissions, keeping landfill and most importantly learning how they can generate income from trashes they once considered as useless materials.

Project Sustainability

The project has a trustworthy sustainability since there is a good demand for all products materials that will be made. It will be able to run on its own as it has been about a year now. The project progress is encouraging, though insufficient working tools and man power are only things that needed empowerment to the project even stronger. Products made will be sold all year long domestically and internationally since the market demand is high, but productivity is low. It will use its products to create environmental awareness hence conducting fundraising. Attending and conducting environmental conservation exhibitions, using online marketing and products export for internal and external markets. However the project shall invest in more on upcycling innovation on different recycled paper usages.

My journey of Environmental protection started in 2002 through 2004 in Beatrice town, Gage County, Nebraska when I used to volunteer together with my SCC college mates to keep the Beatrice city clean for 2 years consecutively. We used to collect all kind of trash thrown along roadsides.

Thank you in advance for your contribution. Your donation will go towards contributing to the income stream generation, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and develop individuals, groups, and school children art skill while adding environmental values.
